How Thirsty Are You?

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” – John 4:13,14

When was the last time that you were so thirsty that you just couldn’t wait until you were able to quench that dry, parched mouth and throat of yours?

I can still remember those days of football practice – especially the “two a days” when we would practice morning and mid afternoon just when the sun was at its peak. Our coaches would take us to the very edge of what seemed to be near dehydration before we were able to finally get a water break. I can remember that my throat seemed to be filled with cotton due to extreme dryness. And then it was just long enough to wet our tongues and throats before we were up and at em’ again as our coaches didn’t want us to be waterlogged and end up getting sick on the field.

There truly is no feeling like being so thirsty and being unable to satisfy and quench that need and desire.

In the opening scriptures, Jesus has just offered a women at a well some water – living water (v. 10). She seems to doubt Him (v. 11-12), but Jesus responds again and promises that she will never thirst again. This is some kind of special water. This water gives one eternal life! So what kind of water is Jesus talking about? He gives us the answer later in John 7:38-39.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Jesus used “water” as a symbol for the Holy Spirit!. He gives us the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, seal us and fill us. Notice that Jesus is talking about “rivers of living water.” Rivers of living water that are flowing out of believers. We need to ask ourselves, “What kind of living waters are flowing through me? Is my spiritual faucet dripping? Can I see a steady stream? Am I experiencing a flood of living water gushing out from the inside? The Holy Spirit should make a difference in one’s life. Jesus did not talk about drips of living water. Truly He said, “rivers of living water” will flow from within.

My friend, are you experiencing these rivers of living water flowing forth in your life from within?

Jesus’ living water is the Holy Spirit who dwells in us as believers. He helps us understand God by giving us spiritual understanding (1 Cor. 2:11-16). He leads us to Jesus, places us in Jesus, matures us in Jesus. He lives in us (Galatians 5:25) and empowers us to live the Christian life (Eph. 5:18-21). He transforms our lives from what we used to be to who He desires we be as we yield our lives completely to Him.

Are you thirsty yet?

Remain blessed,

I like the idea that Jesus gives us a river of living water. He could just give us a few drops or a small stream and we would be satisfied; but instead, he gives us a flowing and nourishing river! Thank you for the encouragement this morning.
